Zeitgeist

March 28th, 2004 jra No comments

I’ve added a new page, a “zeitgeist” look at what search engine queries have taken people here. I saw Movable Type plugins page, and pulled it down. The result is an interesting textual display: the more times a string was in a search engine’s referral query, the larger the font is in the list.

The longest effort was actually wrapping the resulting html to make it look like the rest of the site. I need to find a good CSS tutorial and reference.

The Wings beat the Avs yet again, this time 2-0 in Detroit. This is becoming a habit!

Pancakes!

March 27th, 2004 jra 1 comment

Alton Brown of Food network’s show Good Eats has the best pancake recipe. It’s a Saturday morning ritual here: I cook pancakes while listening to Car Talk. We end up with a bunch to freeze for the rest of the week.

Thanks, AB, for the wonderful recipes and entertaining TV shows.

Movable Type

I’m really getting into customizing Movable Type. I like the flexibility that it provides through plugins and templates. I’ve only scratched the surface, and am leaning heavily on the masters like Brad Choate. I really need to get a book on DHTML, PHP, and all the other buzzwords.

Pattern recognition

March 25th, 2004 jra No comments

I just finished reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. Gibson has always been one of my favorite authors, ever since I borrowed a copy of Burning Chrome from a friend in college. Like most of his works, the sparsely written story took a bit to draw me in. Once it did, I ended up reading it all night until the end.

The title is what drew me to it in the library. I’d recently re-read The Magic of Reading by Bill Hill of Microsoft. Mr. Hill’s paper stems from his work on eBooks, ClearType, and the Microsoft Reader. The human brain is wired for pattern recognition, and this is evident in how people read. The brain learns at first to recognize individual letters, then progresses to recognizing words. Watching Kayleigh teach herself to read sparked my interest in the whole reading process. She’s just like me, able to be utterly consumed by a book.

Gibson’s book doesn’t deal with reading, but someone with the ability to recognize “cool” or “hip” in trends, and consults with advertising firms on new products and advertising. He’s dealt with similar concepts in past books such as Idoru and All Tomorrow’s Parties. There, the protagonist recognizes patterns in data and data access. I’ve seen and experienced this myself at work: scanning log files, database patterns, etc.

Wings beat Avs!

March 25th, 2004 jra No comments

The Wings beat the Avalanche 3-1 in Denver to tie Tampa Bay again in the race for the Presidents Cup. They play again on Saturday at home in Detroit. Manny Legace played a phenomenal game, once again proving that he deserves to be the starting goalie for the playoffs. He’s been backup for some of the best NHL goalies, but this season he’s proved that he has the ability to carry a team to and through the playoffs.

IMO, anyway. I’m not Dave Lewis, just an armchair fan.

Anti-blogging

March 10th, 2004 jra No comments

After 2 years of owning ammond.org, I’ve discovered that I really don’t do much with it. The part that gets used the most is the picture gallery, and chele does the most with that. I don’t even update the Spitfire page that much, although I don’t work on it all that often. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but in hindsight it appears it wasn’t.

One of a couple of possibilities are true. I could have nothing to say. I could have too much other stuff to do, and not have time to update the blog. I could just be lazy.

My bet is lazy. So for the next month, I’m going to make a concious effort to post at least once a week. We’ll see what the future holds.
